The clock tower in Porthleven was illuminated for the first time on Friday as part of the switching on of the port’s Christmas lights display.

People were encouraged to head along to the harbour head from 6.30pm onwards, with Porthleven Town Band playing carols |from 6.45pm.

The switch on then took place at 7pm, followed by the arrival of Father Christmas.

He set up camp at the harbour head and gave out treats to children.

The celebrations were rounded off with fireworks display over the harbour, which prompted plenty |of “oohs” and “ahhs” from the watching crowd.

People from all ages turned out for the event, dressed in warm hats and scarves to keep out the December night chill.

Porthleven Gig Club provided hot dogs and refreshments.

Judy Collins, from the lights committee, said: “It was a lovely evening. Everyone said they enjoyed it. There was such a big turnout, I was so surprised.”

She gave a “big thank you” to the local businesses for their support over the years, in particular Leigh and Adi Santi from the Atlantic Inn for allowing the committee to hold fundraising events there and the support they gave.

Judy also thanked the band and gig club, and everyone who came from Porthleven and Helston.

Special thanks went to Roger Tast, Gavin Lang, Peter Collins, Martin Johns and Matt Hosking for their work in keeping the lights going all year and particularly at Christmas, and Martin for transporting Father Christmas safely, as well as Paul and Sharon from the post office who supplied sweets for Father Christmas to hand out.
