A former Spitfire pilot took pupils on a flight of fantasy at Mullion Primary School when he regaled them with tales of the Second World War.
Battle of Britain veteran Geoffrey Wellum visited the school’s Waves and Surfers classes to tell them about his life as a fighter pilot and squadron leader.
Mr Wellum, a local hero, was known by other pilots during the Battle of Britain as “Boy” because he joined the RAF at 18 in August 1939. He told the children about his experiences of life in the war, from everyday situations to flying planes and fighting for his country.
Mrs Carthey, the Surfers’ teacher, was as in awe as the children, saying: “It was fascinating for the children and staff to meet him and an opportunity of a lifetime.”
