Six seal pups cared for by The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek have been released back into the wild at Gwithian Beach this morning.

The release of the Grey seal pups, Superman, Bruce Wayne, Anastacia, Wonder woman, Quicksilver and Ariel was a major operation involving several members of the Sanctuary team.

The rehabilitation pool was drained, and then each pup was herded into a cage and then transferred to a trailer which was then driven onto the beach for the pups to be safely released.

Usually as soon as a pup has reached 40kg and has received a clean bill of health they are then released back into the wild, but due to the bad weather the animal care team have had to hold back on releasing any pups until the weather condition was right.

Tamara Cooper, animal care supervisor “All the pups we released today were ready to go, with all of them being well over 40kg but due to the weather we have had to wait.”

Bruce Wayne was a particular favourite at the sanctuary and a real success story. When Bruce was rescued from Cot Valley in October, he was found with a broken jaw. This meant that Bruce had to be operated on by local vet Paul Riley, which meant Bruce had to have two wires in his jaw for eight weeks to stabilise the break.

Tamara says “We are all so pleased to have been able to release the pups today, especially Bruce Wayne who has recovered from such a serious injury.”

“We’ll miss them because we’ve got to know them all so well,” she added, “but at the same time it will be great to see them back in the wild where they belong.”

The sanctuary plan to continue releasing Pups whilst the weather is suitable over the next few weeks.
