Mullion’s parish chairman has become the latest recipient of a community award handed out by his own council.

John Lang was chosen to receive the Ron Curnow Community Award for 2015 following nominations by members of the public.

The award is handed out annually to recognise those in the village who make a special contribution to the community.

It was first awarded in 2013 in memory of Ron Curnow, a hugely active member of the community in Mullion who drove the Age Concern bus and helped the local football team.

Mr Lang was presented with the trophy at the January meeting of the parish council last week, by last year’s winner Pauline Rowse.

He also received a Cornish flag lapel pin and a bouquet, with Mrs Rowse thanking him for the work the parish council undertakes in the village. Parish clerk Samantha Folds then presented Mrs Rowse with flowers.

Mr Lang, who has been chairman of the parish council since 2003, said: “It came as a bit of a surprise. Pauline Rowse is one of the hidden heroes of the village. To be considered in the same light is sobering.”

He added that he “genuinely didn’t know” he had been nominated and said he “tried to get it right for the benefit of my parish.”

“I try to do my research and get the argument correct, so we can give informed and balanced opinions.”

Members of the public are invited to nominate people they think are worthy winners, with the shortlist then discussed by the parish council and voted on.

Mr Lang paid no part in this year’s discussion or vote, leaving the room while the decision was made.
