Fundraising before Christmas produced a healthy amount of money that students from Helston Community College have now presented to the town’s community hospital.

Year ten students from the tutor group 10H held their own version of Christmas Jumper Day, involving the whole school.

Year seven held a cake stall and the sixth form took round collection buckets, while staff and students from across the year groups wore their most cheesy Christmas jumpers Praising the work of 10H, their tutor Mrs Hocking said: “They created posters to be displayed around the college, sent emails to head of each year group at the college and ran assemblies in the week leading up to the event.

“It was a great way for the students to give something back to the community as well as learn valuable life skills that underpin our college’s co-operative values.”

Now the students have seen the results of their efforts first |hand, with a tour of Helston Community Hospital and the |chance to hand over a cheque for £400 – just over half the amount collected on the day.

After presenting the cheque to Matron Lynda McHale, Dr Ken Whittle and Ann Russell, from the League of Friends of Helston Community Hospital, the students were shown equipment and facilities paid for by fundraising.

Mrs Russell told the students that the Friends group was planning on using the donation to buy an item for the hospital and would keep the students informed.

The remaining £335 raised by the students was presented to Save the Children before Christmas, in order to meet the government’s deadline for match funding.
