Penryn campus students and residents of the town took to the Glasney Valley armed with litter pickers and black bin bags for the annual stream clean.

Students from EcoSoc, the FXU ecological society, joined residents led by the Glasney Green Space Regeneration Project (GGSRP), taking advantage of the good weather to clear up the river and surrounding green areas.

As well as general litter, the group collected several old tyres, a mattress-worth of old bed springs, other pieces of furniture and a discarded pushchair.

EcoSoc’s Jack Bedford said: “It was fantastic to see the people of Penryn and students working together to clean up our local wild space. We had a very productive morning, and we look forward to running more events in the valley.”

Pip Carlton-Barnes from the GGSRP said: “We are really grateful to EcoSoc for organising the stream clean event and inviting us along. We had a very productive day and made some really interesting fungi discoveries too.

“The valley is looking beautiful and we are really looking forward to May Day as well as celebrating the 750th anniversary of Glasney College.”

The group were also joined by Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Simon Rix, and his daughter Libby, who helped with the litter picking while he discussed the issue of potential development on the land above the valley.
