A suggestion that Helston Town Council should improve the speed of its internet connection was almost thwarted before it began after members found it was not available on their side of the street.

Councillor John Boase had asked for the matter to be added to the latest council agenda, but at the meeting he updated members that having carried out research he had discovered that Market Place, where the Guildhall and town council office are based, was one of the few places where superfast broadband could not be received.

However, he asked for councillors’ support regardless, so the council could be ready as and when it did become available.

One of the things that had prompted his suggestion was the council’s inability to mount a camera on the Guildhall on Flora Day, to stream the dances on the internet.

He added that it would speed up the office work and would open up the possibility of installing a web camera on the building all year round.

Mayor Mike Thomas also pointed out that it could make the Guildhall a more attractive proposition for companies wanting to hold conferences.

Councillor Jonathan Radford-Gaby questioned why superfast broadband was unavailable when his office just a few steps away, above Barclay’s in adjacent Coinagehall Street, could get it.

He agreed that the difference in speed was “amazing.”

It was suggested that the problem could be that currently there was only an “old fashioned” black BT cabinet serving Market Place and in order to update to superfast broadband a new green cabinet would need to be installed.

Despite this, members were unanimous in their agreement that the council should look to update its broadband when the facilities became available.
