Stories from across the world were played out on the Helston stage when youngsters at St Michael’s Primary School marked the end of their term topic.

Year one performed a play bringing together the main stories they had learnt as part of Traditional Tales from Around the World.

These included Little Red Riding Hood, the Australian story of Tiddalik, Anansi and the Turtle from the Caribbean and the Lion Dance, a Chinese New Year story.

The play gave parents and family members the chance to see what the children had been learning. Incorporated into the play were pieces of art and craft items that the children had made themselves, including sock puppets and shadow puppets.

Beforehand the children were busy making and decorating gingerbread men to sell after the shows. The Gingerbread Man was another traditional tale that the children learnt and actually adapted during literacy lessons to create their own versions.

Both year one teachers, Megan Care and Suzanne Bray, said they were “really pleased” with how well both the afternoon and morning plays went.

They added: “The children all learnt their lines and the words to the songs, performing their parts superbly. It was clear to see they thoroughly enjoyed themselves, smiling and putting their all into their role.

“The children fully understood the stories, as these were all learnt during literacy and topic lessons.”

Both teachers thanked their class teaching assistants for putting a great deal of time and effort into the project, working with the children to create the props and scenery.

They also thanked all the parents for providing their child’s costume and helping them to learn their lines.

Both shows were well supported by the children’s families, with plenty of positive comments overheard afterwards.
