A group of teenagers from Helston Community College who have aspirations of a career in the armed forces, headed to the Royal Marine barracks at Stonehouse in Plymouth last week.

The boys, all year 12 and 13 students, were a credit to the college, impressing a Royal Marine captain who said they “stood head and shoulders above the other colleges.”

Captain Wilcox told the Redruth Careers office: “The Helston students were motivated and phenomenal.” He complimented their exceptional attitude towards the tasks they were given and added: “The students were mannerly, engaging and articulate.”

He has recommended that the Helston College lads should strongly consider joining at an officer level of entry as they were “clearly very capable young men.” They made such an impression on the marine team that as a group the marines took some time at the end of the day to offer them some additional career guidance.
