Helston resident, Tracy Carroll, has been selected to represent Team GB at the World Transplant Games in Argentina in August, and to raise money for her trip she is hosting a James Bond Casino night at the Godolphin Club on June 6.

Playing the card tables, sipping Martinis, and dancing the night away to the special numbers that DJ Ben from Poper Job Disco will be selecting on the night, is certainly one way to go about raising money for an athletic competition.

"I want everyone to have fun on the night," said Tracy, 39, who took part in the British Transplant Games in August last year as a swimmer and returned home with one gold medal, three silvers, and a bronze.

She said: “I really wasn’t expecting to win any medals. Before the competition I started swimming three times a week. I used to swim a lot when I was younger and I only really took it up again after I had my transplant.”

Tracy had a kidney transplant in January, 2011, which she received from mum, Angela Carroll. The cause of Tracy’s kidney failure has never been found.

She said: “I was diagnosed as a 'crash lander' in August 2010 with a six per cent kidney function and was put straight into HDU. I spent a short time on dialysis before my transplant in Derriford. I was very lucky because I got my transplant within six months from my mum. If I was on the waiting list I would have had to have waited a couple of years.”

Tracy is supported by Transplant Sport who, along with the Transplant Games, aim to promote fitness to people who have undergone transplant surgery.

Tracy said: “Preparing for the games has kept me healthy. The most important bit for me is to be able to talk about organ donations and if someone signs up to the register from it then I have done my job.”

At her fundraiser next month, a Martini will be served to guests on arrival. Tickets cost £10 and are available from behind the bar at the Godolphin Club and from Gillian’s Larder and Frugi.
