A smashing fundraiser made £500 for Children's Hospice South West at the recent Porthleven Food and Music Festival.

Suzanne Dexter, property manager for Helston based holiday lettings agency Classic Cottages, organised a crockery smashing stall, seeing it as the ultimate way raising money using items that were not good enough for the company’s cottage guests or that the local Children’s Hospice shop was unable to sell.

The stand raised over £230 as festival goers lined up and paid £1 for six throws at a traditional Welsh dresser filled with an array of plates, ornaments, vases and mugs, and Classic Cottages' chairman Simon Tregoning rounded the total up to £500.

Suzanne said: “The unusual crockery smash was a wonderfully noisy fundraising initiative which everyone enjoyed; we always try so hard not to break plates so it was a bit of a guilty pleasure for some. We even managed to find a home for the broken crockery afterwards, which was taken by two local art clubs who will be using the pieces for their mosaic workshops.”

Sarah Stott, corporate partnerships fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West, said: “I would like to thank Suzanne and the Classic team for raising such a fantastic amount for CHSW, and in such a fun and innovative way.

"These types of fundraising events are vital in order for us to continue the work that we do across the region. Special thanks also must go to Simon Tregoning for rounding up the amount to £500 which is an amazing gesture.”
