The long wait is over for pupils at Porthleven Primary School after a new play area was unveiled by the Navy's most senior rating.

Warrant Officer Steve Cass, a former Porthleven schoolboy who rose to become Warrant Officer of the Naval Service, was at the school during its recent armed forces day to open the new multi use games area (MUGA).

Leigh Yates, a parent at the school, applied for funding to have the facility built around 18 months ago, as she wanted to provide a new sports facility for the children and for the community as a whole.

She said: "We thought it would be great because it will help with exercise, with health, and encourage team building.

"We have had an overwhelming reaction, so positive, from people from other clubs and community groups."

She added: "It's been a really long, hard slog to get it but looking at it and at the kids playing on it, the teams and community groups using it, it's like a dream come true."
