Children from Landewednack School at The Lizard enjoyed a special assembly recently hosted by Superintendent Keith Dickson and Julian Waring from the Fisherman's Mission based in Newlyn.
The children were told that there are over 13,000 people who work in the UK's fishing industry, an occupation that is tough and very dangerous with an average of 15 fisherman killed or seriously injured each year.
The Fisherman's Mission is the only national charity that works solely with fishermen and their families. They are able to offer financial and pastoral support and a vital emergency response service - and have done so for over 130 years thanks to generous donations and legacy giving.
The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the work of the Fisherman's Mission and were thrilled to be presented with a locally produced book called Salt of the Earth depicting images and tales from the fishing village of Newlyn. Proceeds of the book go entirely to the Fisherman's Mission supporting their work in Cornwall.
