Porthleven's parking problems may ease slightly after a new 72 space car park was opened in the village on Wednesday.

On a blustery August afternoon, deputy mayor Barbara Powell cut the ribbon on the Withy Field car park at Mill Lane, marking the completion of a third project by the Porthleven Community Interest Company (CIC).

The CIC, whose directors are Andrew Wallis, Louise Winterton, Mark Berryman, David Turnbull and Damelza Storbeck, was awarded £99,750 from the Coastal Community Fund in 2013 to allow it to carry out five projects: the community marquee hire business, up-lighting the Bickford-Smith Institute, the Porthleven Town Trail, a website for the port, and a car park.

Mr Wallis said: "This 72 space car park has been achieved through a partnership between Coodes Estate, Porthleven Town Council and Porthleven Football Club. All the profits from the car park and the community marquee hire business will be used to help fund further community projects, therefore giving Porthleven a sustainable form of funding."

He continued: "The name of the car park was chosen as it is located on one of the areas previous used for growing willow from which the withy material was taken for making crab and lobster pots - a fitting tribute to this traditional craft."

"Porthleven is a popular visitor destination, but suffered with a lack of suitable parking. This new car park, within five minutes of flat and safe walking form the town centre will help address the parking, and allow visitors to experience the charm and character of Porthleven."

The deputy mayor was joined by representatives of the CIC, Coodes Estate, Porthleven Town Council, Porthleven Football Club, Mitchells Builders, which built the site, and Harbour and Dock Company at the opening of the new facility.

The directors thanked Mitchells Builders for building the site, Chris Strike of RA Design for giving his time during the planning and Simon Stone from Out of the Blue.

The car park will be open 24 hours, and will cost £1.40 for up to two-hours parking and £3.50 for 24 hours, with parking for motorcycles and long vehicles.
