Coverack’s annual regatta has been hailed a great success and even though the weather was not particularly summery, all those involved had a great time.

The harbour was crowded with enthusiastic spectators and many contestants. The committee boat was decorated and so were the starter, scribe and handicapper sitting in it. Coverack’s gig crew rowed The Lark around from Porthoustock.

The Go-Bang, with no outboards, started off the proceedings which saw at least ten boats chase each other across the bay. The judge had a difficult task but this all added to the fun. The sailing race took place this year after being cancelled last year because the tail end of hurricane Bertha was blowing too hard. Andy Alden won the Frank Daw Memorial Cup for the best overall competitor in the boating events.

The swimming races were very well supported with some intense and highly competitive moments. The race confined to Coverack boys was won by Arthur Relton and the girls' race was won by Yola Troughton.

The "pillow fight" took a long time to complete as there were so many entrants but as usual was great fun to watch. There were 22 entrants for the diving for plates. The winner Marcus Malek, collected 16 out of 20.

Coverack’s Carnival Queen, Megan Martin, presented the medals and cups to the winners.

"The committee must congratulate the younger contestants who are so enthusiastic and enter as many events as they can," said a spokesman. "Many were seen in the village later wearing their medals and the souvenir caps which are given to every contestant as a memento of the day. A chocolate bar is given to every contestant to keep energy levels up.

"The regatta committee wishes to thank the participants, spectators and local businesses who support with raffle prizes and the many vice presidents who contribute annually to funds. Thank you to Trish and David Bruce and Maggie and John Gaunt for the raffle. Thank you to Glen Carey and Tom Salmon who do an excellent and amusing commentary from the Fisherman’s Rest with the PA system ably organised by Sput Sturmy. Thank you to Robin Hobson and Chris Prior from Coverack Windsurfing School who supply and manage the safety aspects, paddle boats and other equipment to make the day so successful. Thanks also to the recorder, handicapper, course setter and judge who ensure the success of this fun annual event in Coverack."
