The Helston Business Improvement Partnership (HBIP) is launching a last-gasp appeal to local companies to get on board with a Business Improvement District (BID) for the town.

As Section 106 money from the development of Tesco and Sainsbury's stores in Helston runs out, HBIP development officer Shirley MOralee is urging businesses in the town "to get involved before it is too late" and "ensure that the town has funding to continue to compete against other towns on an equal footing."

HBIP has said the funding from the supermarkets has supported projects including marketing the town, events such as the Christmas Fayre, and given a voice for the businesses of Helston over three years, and as it ends the town faces a possible downturn in footfall.

HBIP has looked at developing a BID scheme for the town which could provide annual funding for Helston for five years, and claims evidence from a feasibility study shows "a substantial need for a BID," but it needs "drive and commitment from the business owners themselves" to go forward.

Shirley said: "As a town we have some incredible business owners that have operated for many years, you hold an abundance of business acumen that can benefit your town and your business, so what’s stopping you?

"Why is a BID so important to the town? BID schemes are ‘business led for business benefit’ and can make a real difference to your bottom line and sustainability."

She added: "As a town we need a voice to compete and benefit your businesses, we cannot do this without your commitment and help. This is the last opportunity to get involved to make a difference."
