Porthleven Public Hall has had a facelift and is now equipped with some extra gadgets and time-saving gear thanks to a legacy left by Phyllis Arthur.
The great and the good of the town were invited to the official re-opening of the hall which saw local historian Vic Strike cut the ribbon and give a short speech. Guests were then invited to look around the re-vamped hall and enjoy a cream tea which had been organised by Paula Johns, chairman of the hall, and Maureen Williams, chairman of the local WI.
Taking pride of place in the hall is a photograph of Phyllis Arthur and a plaque which acknowledges the part she played, following her death, in enabling the upgrade to take place. Thanks to her legacy, the hall now has a new projector and screen, the seats have been reupholstered, there's new carpet in the committee room, along with WiFi and a DVD player, and there is a new dishwasher in the kitchen.
"We could not ask for anything more," said hall secretary, Joy Gunter. "The hall is well used - usage is increasing - and we are hoping now that it will increase even more."
The hall is used by a range of community groups for, among other things, yoga, judo and art classes and is an ideal meeting place for groups such as the Old Cornwall Society and the WI. To find out more, or to inquire about booking the hall, go to porthlevenpublichall.org.
