Children from 11 primary schools got together last week for a maths' masterclass when teachers set out to prove the subject can be fun.

The event was held at the Light and Life Centre in Helston and had been organised by a group of maths coordinators from schools in the Southerly Point Co-operative Trust. The day was set up as part of an intervention to raise aspiration, achievement and confidence in maths.

The children involved were from year five and six from Wendron, Germoe, Halwin, Crowan, Cury, Porthleven, Trannack, Mullion Primary, Parc Eglos, Godolphin, Sithney, Boskenwyn and Garras Schools.

The youngsters had enjoyed sessions from Helston Community College before half term, but the one last week was taught by MISC (Mats Intervention Sub Committee) which is made up of six maths coordinators from the trust: Katie Bevan from Parc Eglos, Helen Neil from Sithney, Zoe Symons from Germoe, Emma Greatbatch from Garras, Kathryn Taberer from Wendron and Vicci Gillam from Crowan.

The children will next be attending a session at Pool Academy, hosted by the Maths Hub, and a session from the University of Plymouth. MISC have set up all of the sessions and will continue to run them all year, teaching children from different year groups each term. The sessions are being funded by the West Cornwall Teaching School - Parc Eglos School.
