Helston Community College opened its doors to year 11 students at its recent post 16 open evening when the teenagers were invited in to see what was on offer for them.

The students were able to discuss their post 16 option choices with college staff as well as being invited to meet student ambassadors currently studying at the college to find out more about what student life would entail.

Representatives from Exeter University and Cardiff Metropolitan University were also on hand to discuss subject combinations and progression after sixth form study.

The college's sixth form is among the largest in Cornwall with over 350 students enrolled on a variety of courses. It recruits from the school’s own year 11 but also from other secondary schools in the local area. As well as the wide range of A Level courses on offer, there are also opportunities to study for diplomas in subjects including health and social care, music technology, sport, travel and tourism, beauty therapy and construction.

In the school’s recent Ofsted inspection, post 16 was rated "outstanding." A spokesman for the college said: "Not only do we value the academic progress of students, the college endeavours to make Post 16 an enriching experience. The college offers supportive tutors, a varied enrichment programme, and sports academies."

The Sixth Form Student Union also organises activities, entertainment, and social events throughout the year and the students take an active role within the life of the college through their involvement in the performing arts, sport clubs, DoE, community service and various clubs.
