The fight continues to stop traffic wardens "creeping around" and ticketing Helston car owners "with boring regularity" every bank holiday.

This was the view of some town councillors as they were updated with the latest on their call for bank holiday parking rules to be the same as Sundays, like in other parts of the country.

Councillor Jonathan Radford-Gaby said: "It would seem, with boring regularity, [traffic wardens] appear every single bank holiday. It's seen by the public, rightly or wrongly, that Cornwall Council are using it simply as a revenue raiser. They swoop down and issue what seems like multiple tickets for minor parking issues.

"They are creeping around the town, issuing tickets to people who, quite sensibly, have maybe had a drink and decided to leave their car because it's assumed relaxed rules apply."

He described it as "very, very poor generosity of spirit."

Cornwall Councillor Judith Haycock, who has been looking into the possibility of getting the changes in place, on behalf of the town council, said she believed the unitary authority had a problem with the expense this would cause.

She explained it would require changing all the traffic orders throughout Cornwall, which was why there had been "some resistance" to date.

However, Mr Radford-Gaby stressed: "I really do think that whatever the expense, we need to sort this one out."

Mayor Mike Thomas was of the opinion that people visiting the county were often caught out because it was thought bank holiday rules would be the same as in "90 per cent of the country."

Councillor John Boase, only half joking, suggested: "It would be quite simple to just give all the enforcement officers a day off on bank holiday. People wouldn't get caught if there's no one there to put a ticket on - and you don't have to pay them double time!"
