WARNINGS on social media about a women being followed or attacked in Helston have been dismissed by the police's Helston Neighbourhood Team.

Posting on their Facebook page the team said: "It has become evident from social media that rumours of women being followed or attacked in our area is rife on the internet.

"To date Helston Station has received a single credible report of an offence arising from such an incident, and for which a full investigation is underway.

"Since that report was made public, several other well intentioned members of the public have reported similar incidents to the police, none of which at this time are believed to be related to the original report, it is felt that local women may be uneccessarily concerned by the heightened social media coverage.

"Helston is a very safe town with an extremely low crime rate, and although the police would always advise people to be safe and to think about their own welfare, it is felt that there is no specific concern at this time. To reassure members of the community local officers have increased patrols in the area, providing an enhanced presence in the town and the surrounding residential areas."

The police response follows a warning by a woman on Facebook after she was allegedly approached and followed by a 'man in black' reported in the Helston Packet this week. However the police appear to be dismissing her claims.

The move follows a recent allegation of rape in the town, which the police say they are taking seriously, and another incident where a woman claimed two men tried to get her to get into her car.
