The parents of a baby boy whose life was saved through the care of Truro’s neonatal unit have marked his first birthday by donating the proceeds of a charity day in Mullion.

Little Jenson Ramsden was born eight weeks early and had to spend more than a month in the special care unit at the Royal Cornwall Hospital before being allowed home.

Now, having celebrated his first birthday, Jenson’s parents Chris and Laura Ramsden decided to give something back by organising a fundraising day at Mullion Golf Club. Chris is a PGA Professional and coaches golf at the club. His idea to host an open golf competition to raise money and thank the unit for its “outstanding care” was fully supported by club president, Jimmy Stewart, club secretaries Ray Griffiths and Janet Pollard, and the other club officers.

More than 100 visiting teams and members of Mullion Golf Club turned out for the day, paying to enter the competition.

Prizes were offered for first, second and third place teams, best visiting team and best ladies team. Adding to the fun was a raffle that included spa treatments, overnight stays at Cornish venues and rounds of golf as prizes. St Austell Brewery provided drinks for the day.

Handing over the £780 donation from the event, Chris said: “We couldn’t give enough back for what the staff did on the neonatal unit for our son. They were incredible.”

Support of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity – Neonatal Unit is used to improve care in that particular area.

A hospital spokesperson said: “This gift will provide state-of-the art equipment, patient and staff amenities, and specialty training for staff that is above and beyond NHS provisions.”
