TERRY Wogan, the man who brought Flora Day to millions with his hit single the Floral Dance, has died this morning.

The Radio Two behometh, who helped raise millions for charity through Children in Need, died early this morning, aged 77, surrounded by his family.

He last appeared on Radio Two in November.

His performance of the Floral Dance provoked controversy with purists when he included the 1911 lyrics by Kate Emily Barclay Moss and altered the tune slightly to that played by Helston Town Band, but it was a huge hit in the charts.

In a statement the family of the veteran broadcaster said: "Sir Terry Wogan died today after a short but brave battle with cancer.

"He passed away surrounded by his family. While we understand he will be missed by many, the family ask that their privacy is respected at this time."

BBC director general Tony Hall said: "Terry truly was a national treasure."
