The first St Keverne Farmers' Market proved to be a sell out success, quite literally.

Empty stalls were all that was left by the end of Saturday's event in the parish hall.

The market will now be a monthly fixture in the parish calendar, taking place on the fourth Saturday of the month.

It has been put together by Penny Buckingham of Coverack-based craft company Cotton Cottage, Marianne Fuller of Fuller Blooms and Garden Nurseries near Porthallow and St Keverne cake maker Kellie Tripconey.

Marianne and Kellie had been finding it difficult to get a place in other farmers' markets in the area, due to the growing popularity of these events with traders in recent years, and spoke to Penny who has contacts in this field.

Penny said of the first market: "It was unbelievably brilliant - we can't believe the success. The hall was absolutely packed and all the stallholders sold out. We had so much good feedback."

Parish councillor Derek Kevern was invited to cut the ribbon to officially open the market, with Penny explaining: "Derek Kevern is such a well known figure in our parish - a local farmer, now retired, he still serves the community on the parish council and is a bit of a figurehead in the village.

"It's an honour to have him to do it and gets all the generations involved."

A total of 18 stalls, selling a range of goods from cakes and crafts to breads and flowers, took part in the inaugural event and a further four are expected to join the next market, to bring meat, fish and restaurant tasters to the mix. This will take place on Saturday, February 27.

Writing on the event's dedicated Facebook page the organisers said: "We cannot thank everyone enough for coming and supporting the local businesses. The market was a huge success and we are really looking forward to the next one.

"We are very lucky to have such fabulous community spirit in St Keverne and the surrounding areas."
