Plans to move Mullion Post Office into the village's chocolate factory have received support on social media.

Post Office Ltd wants to relocate the branch in Nansmellyon Road into The Chocolate Factory at Mullion Meadows, Trenance, approximately half a mile out of the village.

The office has been run by a temporary postmaster since the death of sub-postmaster Malcolm Grimmer last November.

The company said: "Whilst this arrangement has maintained post office services to our customers, it does mean the current service is liable to close at short notice. Therefore, for some time now we have actively sought a more secure solution to enable us to retain services locally longer term."

The new branch would offer the same post office products and services but from an open-plan till at the shop counter, instead of from a separate screened counter. The only service not provided would be travel insurance on demand, although referrals could be made.

It would continue to operate six days a week, Monday to Saturday, although with slightly reduced hours - 9am until 5pm, a reduction of 90 minutes each day.

Post Office Ltd added: "Although there is no bus service operating between the two locations, the operator is investigating the possibility of running the local community bus from the main village centre to the new premises. Times will be agreed in due course, if it did go ahead."

The news has been welcomed by people commented on the Mullion Facebook page, with Louise Martin writing: "I think it's a great plan and good to see that the opening hours will nearly be the same. I wish you all success."

Kate D'Arcy agreed: "It'd be horrendous to lose the post office so I think this is a great idea."

Sharing the "exciting" news on its Facebook page, The Chocolate Factory and Craft Centre, said: "The application has been ongoing long before the sad loss of Malcolm Grimmer.

"We here are the first to admit we are not perfectly located, not being central to the village, but sadly if this does not go ahead, Mullion will lose this valuable service and Helston will be our nearest office."

The company has launched a six-week consultation in the village and is asking for people's views on the proposed changes until March 9.
