The captain of RNAS Culdrose will be among those speaking at at the first Porthleven Literary Festival next week.

Taking place as part of Porthleven Food Festival, on the weekend of April 16 and 17, the festival will bring together local authors to talk about their work.

Among them will be Captain Adrian Orchard, commanding officer of Helston's naval base, who has written the book Joint Force Harrier about his then squadron's transition from the Sea Harrier FA2 to the Harrier GR7, working onboard HMS Illustrious and deployment to the Afghan airbase of Khandahar.

Jay Armstrong, organiser of the literary festival, said: "RNAS Culdrose features largely in the local community and having just paid a fond and sad farewell to 771 search and rescue squadron, we are delighted that Captain Orchard has agreed to speak at the first Porthleven Literary Festival.

"As the author of Joint Force Harrier Captain Orchard is well versed in the importance of preserving and telling stories that reflect bravery, courage and daring.

"He will be musing on life and leadership post-Harrier Force and will be speaking about the imminent introduction to service of the new British super carriers.

"Not everyone is aware of what goes on behind the camp wire and we're looking forward to hearing about life in the Fleet Air Arm today and how traditions from the past influence the stories of the future."
