Two full days of events can be enjoyed this weekend at the eighth Porthleven Food Festival.

Celebrating the best of Cornwall’s food, beer and bands, the family-friendly festival has once again been organised by volunteer members of the community and is free to visit.

It will feature more than 100 street stalls selling food, crafts and artisan produce, along with bands in the evening and, new for this year, the first Porthleven Literary Festival running alongside it.

One of the festival's highlights is always the Chef’s Theatre, where some of the best chefs both locally and nationally will provide live food demonstrations over both Saturday and Sunday this year.

They will include Josh Eggleton, one of the UK’s youngest Michelin starred chefs, as well as Ben Tunnicliffe, Jack Stein, Fiona Were,Nicky Grant and Stew Eddy, with festival patron Antony Worral-Thompson opening at 10am on Saturday.

Before the main weekend, however, the event kicks off with the inaugural Golden Oyster Food Awards on Friday at 7.30pm.

Hosted by Daphne Skinnard from Radio Cornwall, these will celebrate local restaurants, cafes and retailers.

Organisers from the festival have shortlisted different categories including best pub (with food), best restaurant, best alfresco dining, best café and best retailer.

The awards will be followed by live music from 8.30pm including headliners The Jar Family.

Other acts booked to perform over the weekend include Samba Celtica, Porthleven Town Band and the Cadgwith Singers, with Saturday night headliner being The Mad Cows.

Organisers have been working with pupils from Porthleven Primary School to design a spectacular firework display that will take place from 9pm.

Continuing the action into Sunday, this year also sees the first Great Cornish Bake Off competition, themed around the Matter Hatter's Tea Party from Alice in Wonderland.

Porthleven WI has been involved in bringing the competition to fruition, with members of the community invited to enter.

Judging begins in the Chefs Theatre ten at 11am, with a tea party from 11.30am ahead of the prize giving at 12.30pm.

Immediately afterwards, at 1pm, the winner of the fourth series of the Great British Bake Off in 2013, Frances Quinn, will demonstrate her skills.

An auction of art, produce and other prizes, including a week’s holiday in a ?harbourside cottage from festival sponsors Porthleven Holiday Cottages, will take place at 3.30pm, ahead of an evening of music from 5pm to wrap up festivities. Headline act will be British Reggae band Shanty.

Also over both days will be a photography exhibition celebrating ten years of the Masked Ball and a Literary Festival for book lovers.

This begins at 10.30am with Earth Signing from Danu Fox and continues through the day - including Desert Island Books at 3.30pm, when author Ella Berthoud will interview Antony Worral-Thompson - to 6pm when there will be performance poetry.

Sunday's offerings begin at 11am and include a talk by the commanding officer of RNAS Culdrose, Captain Adrian Orchard, at 12.30pm about his book Joint Force Harrier.
