Volunteer work in Helston proved to be a whitewash on Saturday.

This was exactly the aim of Helston-Lizard Rotary Club members, however, who spent the day sprucing up the town's white washed walls ahead of Flora Day.

It has become an annual activity for members, after they first completed the job in 2013 following a fundraising campaign led by John Head.

Steve Ford, from the club, said: "This year we have been indebted to Bob Sanders, who has power washed the walls for us in preparation for the painting.

"We had a good turnout of members who were able to paint the walls at the Coronation Park, Spar roundabout and St Johns."

He added that, weather permitting, members hoped to be out again this evening to do the Bowling Green wall.

"We would thank John Leech of the Lakeside Cafe and an unknown lady from Meneage Road who kindly provided our teams with hot drinks," said Mr Ford.

The work was carried out in the run up to the official Town Tidy taking place in Helston all this week, organised by Helston in Bloom.

A large number of groups, including the WI, cubs, beavers and staff from Tesco to name a few, are taking on different areas of the town, clearing rubbish, trimming back overgrowth and generally tidying up, to make the town look its best for its annual feast day.
