A mix up has meant that Helston's May Day parade route will be shorter than usual.

Each year Helston Town Band mark the start of May by playing the Flora Day tune through the town, at 7am and 7pm.

Taking place exactly a week before Flora Day, it is often referred to as an unofficial "practice" for the band and the crowds of people who turn out to watch them and dance along behind.

This year, with May 1 falling on a Sunday, the parades will be moved to the following day, Bank Holiday Monday.

While the route usually takes in the area around Cross Street, however, this year it will be kept to the town centre.

This is because, following confusion over who was responsible for organising the road closures, Cornwall Council was unable to complete the necessary paperwork in time.

It means that the band will assemble at the Guildhall, both in the morning and evening, and march up Meneage Street to the end of the one-way system, at the junction with The Parade, then turn around and march back down the street.

Members will then process along Wendron Street, before turning into Penrose Road. At the end of that road they will turn left into Church Street to the traffic lights, before turning right and marching down Coinagehall Street. The band will finish the parade by going around the Bowling Green and marching back up Coinagehall Street to the Guildhall.

Graham Carter, honorary secretary for the band, said: "We apologise for those who would normally experience the delights of the day but we hope to resume normal service next year."
