Six people were admitted to hospital following a carbon monoxide leak at a family home in Helston on Wednesday night.

Firefighters were called to the house at Farms Common just before midnight after the family reported their carbon monoxide alarm was sounding and one occupant had unusual black marks on their face.

The family had evacuated to a neighbouring property on hearing the alarm and ventilated the property, before six firefighters and an officer arrived at the scene.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using a gas monitor entered the building and found the source of the carbon monoxide was a coal fired range, measuring levels as high as 200 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the property: Levels of carbon monoxide above 70 ppm can cause symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and nausea, and between 150 to 200 ppm can begin to cause disorientation, unconsciousness, and eventually death.

Six members of the household were taken to hospital via ambulance while firefighters extinguished the fire and moved it outside, remaining on scene to ventilate the home until it was clear.
