A major expansion of one of Helston's housing estates is being proposed, but is already caused anger amongst existing residents.

A drop-in event is taking place this coming Monday to give more details about a proposed scheme to build 75 affordable homes on land next to the Bulwark Estate.

Currently agricultural land, Coastline Housing hopes to develop it into 45 affordable rented homes and 30 shared ownership homes, which would be part-buy/part-rent.

The latest figures on the Homechoice register show that there is approximately 600 people waiting for an affordable house in Helston.

Planning consultancy Situ8 is currently carry out research on behalf of the housing association, ahead of putting together a planning application.

A draft layout of where the houses might sit, as well as ideas of what they might look like, will be on display at the drop-in session this Monday, which is being held at the Old Cattle Market between 3.30pm and 7.30pm.

There will also be information on access to the site, which is proposed to be through the tarmac area in front of Nansloe Academy, where currently cars are often parked.

Encouraging people to get involved, Angela Warwick, from Situ8, said: "We're at a stage where we need to gather local opinion. We understand there will be a lot of concern about access; we need to alleviate that and incorporate that into our scheme.

"We need to look parking, not just for the houses we want to build but to try and make it a better area for everyone who lives there. We're to make that road a good access into the site, whilst not impacting on the existing school.

"This is a really important event for us to let local people feed in about living there and going to the school."

The land in question is referred to as the HX3 site and identified as one of three in Helston that has the potential for development in the Helston Town Framework document.

It is the final area to come up for discussion, with planning permission already granted for 450 homes on the HX1 site at Trenethick and 219 homes for HX2 at Clodgey Lane, with talks ongoing about increasing this to 404.

The proposal has already sparked anger on Facebook, however, from many people already living in that area.

Writing in the Friends and Residents of Bulwark group, they are particularly concerned about the access for the proposed new homes.

Catherine Robinson said: "I'm happy for more houses to be built but my only concern is the access. Possibly by the school, which is an accident waiting to happen."

There was also concern about the pressure this would put on services, with Anne Varker writing: "Do we need any more houses in Helston, the infrastructure of the town can barely cope with the new ones we've got now?"

Joanna Morley said: "A lot of private houses bought their homes there because they knew it was farm land and wouldn't get built up on.

"I'd get ready for new neighbours, new dog walkers with nowhere local to walk, new roads and they'll find a way round the lack of school spaces too. Nansloe will expand.

"Been right too many times on these roads and can't see any way round this, unless hoards turn out to have a say with plausible concerns."
