Royal fever will take over the Helston and Lizard area next weekend when communities will come together to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Although Her Majesty actually reached the landmark age back in April, many towns and villages have chosen to instead celebrate her ‘official’ birthday, next Saturday.

They include Helston, where the town council is hosting a tea party at the boating lake between 2pm and 5pm.

Helston Town Band will be performing and everyone will gather together at 3pm to sing ‘happy birthday’ to the Queen.

There will also be garden fete style stalls, a ‘hurdy gurdy’ and a beer tent, with refreshments available from the Lakeside Café.

Guests of honour will be the town’s residents who are also turning 90 this year, who will be presented with special coins marking the occasion.

Those attending will be able to enjoy food with a ticket bought in advance from Gillian’s Larder in Meneage Street, costing £5.50, although the rest of the event is free to visit.

The afternoon will incorporate the choosing of this year’s Helston Harvest Fair King and Queen.

This year that task is being given to the 90-year-old special guests.

The judging will take place at 3.30pm and anyone from the ages of seven through to 11 years old is welcome to enter, although a parent or guardian will need to be present.

The King and Queen will have several dates for their diaries, especially the Harvest Fair Carnival on September 3 and the switch-on of the Christmas lights.

The crowns and cloaks are provided and there will be an allowance of up to £20 to help with expenses.
