A lasting memorial to a much-loved St Martin councillor was officially opened on Saturday during a celebration to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

The event on Saturday afternoon included the opening of the new village hall porch, which fittingly was paid for by leftover money raised at St Martin's Diamond Jubilee celebrations for the Queen four years ago, topped up with a grant from the National Lottery.

The porch was an idea from the late Bill Bryant, a parish councillor in the village for 40 years, and a plaque has been placed on it to commemorate him.

Parish councillor Brindley Hosken said a few words to open the facility before the festivities began, with a tea for all attending.

A huge spread was laid out by ladies from the village, who had been busy baking cakes, quiches and sausage rolls.

Afterwards there was a chance to burn some of it off, with children's sports on the field outside organised by Suzanne Bray, a primary school teacher in Helston who lives in the village.

For the adults there was the opportunity to learn square dancing in the evening, led by the area's Cornwall councillor Walter Sanger and his friends, with a pasty and dessert supper to round off the day.
