Former students of Helston’s ‘Green School’ are being asked to share their memories for a place in history.

Cornubian Arts and Science Trust (CAST) will be holding an event two weeks from today, open to anyone who worked at or attended Helston County Secondary School at 3 Penrose Road.

CAST, which is now based out of the building, is working with oral history organisation Azook, from Krowji in Redruth, on a project to record down memories from that time.

Called Green School Revisited, the project is being covered by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and aims to make permanent the stories that were told at previous events involving the former pupils.

These include two drop-in evenings at the old school building and another with year three children at Parc Eglos School, when CAST did not have resources to record the information down.

This will now happen on Wednesday, July 13 between 2pm and 7pm, when pupils will again be able to explore the building, meet and chat, as well as speak with Azook volunteers.

Teresa Gleadowe, chair of CAST, said: “From conversations with former staff and pupils at previous Green School events, we know that there is a great wealth of recollection about life at the school and about school years.

“We want to spread the word to people who attended the school, especially during the sixties and up to the time when it closed in 1972. During this period the school served children from the Lizard Peninsula and we hope to collect memories of daily life and of growing up in these remote communities, as well as stories about school life.”

People are asked to take along school photographs, school reports and other documents, as well as photographs relating to home and leisure activities during school years, which, if permitted, will be scanned on the day.

It is hoped to share the captured material at future community events and via the Azook initiative cornishmemory.com, a free to access online archive of Cornish life featuring more than 30,000 photographs, films and audio recordings.
