A campaign to clean up Porthleven of dog mess has really started to make its mark.

Specially designed logos are being mounted on bins around the port, encouraging people to take action with the catchy message: “You know what to do, pick up my poo.”

Ordinarily organisations are not allowed to put posters on Cornwall Council bins, but the authority has agreed to support the scheme as a pilot and given special permission to see whether the locally fronted campaign will make a difference.

The slogan and accompanying logo is the work of Porthleven School pupil Lyla Lowden, who won a design competition run by Porthleven Town Council.

Now her winning picture has been reproduced free of charge by local printer Andrew Bayley.

Lyla said: “It’s really good because it tells people not to leave their dog poo lying around, because it’s dirty and annoying, especially if you want to play football at the park. I really hope that this will remind people to pick up.”

The hope is to maintain Porthleven’s reputation as a dog-friendly village, whilst keep it clear of mess.

Numerous restaurants and cafes currently allow dogs inside and many more have signed up to hold spare poo bags and to display the clean-up logo.

Mayor Barbara Powell said: “I was so pleased that Lyla, who drew the happy dog logo, was the first person to put a sticker on a bin.

“She must be proud to see her dog tell the other dogs and their owners to clear up after them and keep Porthleven the nice, clean, dog friendly place it is.”

The group behind the campaign is planning a series of events throughout the year to keep awareness up and see what effect the campaign is having.
