Helston Town Band was blessed with some rarely seen summer sunshine when members held their annual band fete.

This was opened by BBC news reader Rebecca Wills, ably assisted by her daughter Polly.

The opening was followed by a performance from the Helston Town Band Student Brass who, in the absence of their musical director, were led by Ben Curnow.

The band performed well, with many of the players - all aged six to 16 - performing in public for the first time.

The Student Brass were followed by the Helston Town Band Concert Brass before the Town Band took to the seats for their performance.

This was rounded off with a well-received performance of Helston’s very own Flora Dance conducted by Phoebe, granddaughter of solo cornet player Ian Harvey.

There were also a number of stalls available, a raffle and the Lakeside Café was open for refreshments all afternoon.

Band secretary Graham Carter said: “The band would like to thank everybody who supported them on the day and also with our other fundraising activities.

“A recent appeal to replace our drum for Flora Day brought an outstanding response from companies and individuals in the town. Their donations have meant that enough has been raised to replace the drum and a number of other items that are needed.

“Fundraising is an ongoing effort within the band and all donations are put to good use.”

The band is also looking for members of the community with an interest in the band to join its committee. For more information contact Mr Carter on 07973 797040 or email agarcarts@btinternet.com
