A quite literal bumper crop of produce graced the tables of the newly resurrected Porthleven Village Show when it returned on Sunday.

Giant leeks and other vegetables sat alongside fruit, flowers, cookery, photography and artwork in the public hall, with the best awarded certificates and cups. There were also classes for children to enter.

There has not been a produce show in the port since 1988, but was resurrected following a conversation involving new show chair Jill Blunn.

A regular exhibitor in other shows in the area, she was pondering over why Porthleven had no such event - and decided to start one, incorporating the horticultural show and flower show that have also fallen by the wayside over the years.

The response from the community was "fantastic," with 76 people entering 354 exhibits, and 125 entries in the vegetable section alone.

Jill said: "It went brilliantly. We knew there was a lot of interest by the amount of programmes we put out. I asked the crowd at the prize giving if they wanted it next year and there was a great big 'yes'."

She added that while she was the one with the original idea, it would not have been possible without the help of the committee, saying: "I have the ideas but haven't got the expertise to be able to do it. The committee were brilliant; I'm so chuffed."

There were 13 cups presented to the best exhibits, the majority of which have been sponsored by businesses in the local area.

It is hoped that more will be added in the coming years, but for the first year the organisers decided to keep it simple.

Show secretary Lee Eggle said: "It was so successful. We've had fantastic comments; people have been very favourable."

It is planned to keep the same weekend for next year's show, the Sunday before August Bank Holiday weekend, which will be August 20, 2017.
