Helston Harvest Fair Carnival procession has had to be cancelled this afternoon due to the bad weather.

It was due to have begun making its way around the town at 5pm today, following judging at the football club.

However, organisers were forced to take the difficult decision to cancel the parade due to the heavy rain.

A statement on the event’s Facebook page reads: “Sad to say that the carnival has been cancelled this afternoon due to the weather.

“We know you have put a lot of effort into your entries so we will be judging floats and walkers tomorrow morning. There will be no procession.”

Judging will now take place at the Fairground car park opposite Coronation Park at 10.30am, with entrants asked to be there at 10am.

However, due to the advanced notice needed for a road closure, there is no opportunity to parade down there.

While understanding that the situation was out of organisers’ control, parents took to the social media site to speak of their children’s disappointment.

One wrote: “I've got one very disappointed carnival queen that won't get to parade through the town now.”

Another mum said her son, who was to have been carnival king, had been “practising his wave.”

Organisers later added: “Sorry for the disappointment, not a decision we have enjoyed taking.”

A pet show and dog show still took place this morning, under cover of the clubhouse at Helston Football Club, and a craft and produce show is still due to be held at the Old Cattle Market tomorrow, with entry to the public from 1.30pm.
