Two gymnasts from Falmouth and Helston are celebrating after becoming the first competitors from Cornwall to win a major competition in London.

Matt Heaney and Elliot Bullen, who train at Swallows of Helston, travelled up to the capital to compete at the London Mens Open.

The event is recognised as being one of the premier men's artistic competitions in the UK, and has been around for 106 years, being used as a trial for gymnasts aiming to join the British national team.

Falmouth School student Elliot, 13, competed against over 300 different gymnasts from ages 9-14 including some of his Team GB Junior Gymnast team mates. Competing across several categories, he took six medals and won the overall in the elite level five category, the highest possible for his age group.

His Swallows team mate Matt Heaney, from Helston, took home five gold medals and was also named as champion, achieving London Open club level six.

The gym is slowly coming back together after recently being flooded, with a new floor on order, and the staff hope it will reopen next week. Despite the flood the squad have continued training as competition season is in full swing.

And it is not time to rest for Elliot, who will be performing at his school's open evening this week.

Head of PE at Falmouth School, Christy Benney, said: “This is an absolutely fantastic achievement. We’re all so proud of Elliot and can’t wait to see his routine for ourselves.”
