A true autumn day provided a fitting backdrop for this year's 69th Grade Ruan Horticultural Society Autumn Show on Saturday.

Ruan Minor Village Hall was filled with entries for the show that was opened by MP Derek Thomas.

He declared himself impressed by the standard of entries that he saw and gave particular mention to a crystal clear jar of honey, the dahlias and some of the children’s exhibits. However, for him it was the collection of apples exhibited by Doug Stevens that really stood out for their quality and truly summed up autumn - a view agreed with by the judges, who awarded them the title of best exhibit in show.

David Endean, from the show, said a good crowd of people had come to view the entries, support the show and enjoy the afternoon with a cup of tea and a piece of cake.

Many children were in awe at what was described by some as a fairytale pumpkin, which took several people to carry in. It was grown by Doug Stevens, who also had the longest runner bean and heaviest fodder beet.

There was a tempting display of cookery, with a keenly contested chocolate cake class won by Gina Spiers and best exhibit awarded to Elizabeth Endean for her saffron buns.

In total the show saw 87 exhibitors from across West Cornwall showing more than 700 exhibits. Plans are now afoot for the landmark 70th show next year.
