The future of Cornwall's two hospices is looking bright thanks to a Night of Neon at Helston's Flambards theme park on Saturday.

Arguably the charity's most colourful fundraising event of the year, the evening saw 140 runners completing a route around the park's attractions dressed in their most fluorescent outfits.

They could choose to run the 1.5 miles once or twice, to make it a three-mile challenge - and along the way they encountered a series of obstacles in the form of bubbles, foam, smoke and thrown powder paint.

The entire route was marshalled by the members of Helston's branch of army cadets, with St John Ambulance paramedics also on hand providing support.

Rowan Blewett, events fundraiser for the charity, said: "It went really well and we're really pleased with the amount of attendees, as well as the support from our sponsors. Flambards were brilliant and everyone was up for it, getting dressed up in their neon."

She added that this year saw more than double the amount of people taking part from last year's inaugural event.

Runners paid a registration fee and were then encouraged to collect sponsorship money on top of that, with the charity estimating that around £5,000 was raised before the event had even taken place. This figure will then rise when sponsorship money is added on and it is hoped there will also be match funding from corporate sponsors.

All of the money raised goes towards the charity's work funding the nursing teams at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia's Hospice in Hayle.
