The St Johns area of Helston is among the locations being considered to launch a new Emergency Plan for the town.

The go-ahead has been given to start drawing up a plan of what should happen in event of an emergency such as flooding.

Town councillors Ronnie Williams, Paul Williams and Tim Grattan-Kane will be members of a working party, supported by town clerk Chris Dawson, to create a plan concentrating initially on one area of the town.

Martin Alvey, community flood resilience manager at Cornwall Council, recommended starting with the St Johns area, due to its propensity for flooding, and then gradually adding on other parts of the town.

However, Mr Williams told a meeting of the amenities committee that in his opinion St Johns was “way down the list” due to planned improvement works by the Environment Agency and Cornwall Council already focussing on that area with its flood plan.

“After the meeting I think we could come up with another suggestion of where it could kick off,” he added.

It was agreed that the working party members should decide where best to begin the plan.

The amenities committee heard that Cornwall Council offered £100 grants for new Emergency Plans and £500 grants once a plan had been adopted.

Helston could be divided geographically, with each other producing its own plan and therefore be entitled to separate grants.

The plan will contain information on what to do in the run to an incident, what support can be given to emergency services and how to support the clean-up operation afterwards.

Two versions will be produced: a masterplan containing contact telephone numbers and a redacted version for general distribution.

Mr Alvery encouraged the working party to ask for the backing of groups in the town such as the three Rotary clubs and the Women’s Institute, whose members could support an incident en masse.
