A Helston councillor has spoken of her disappointment that taxis are continuing to park in front of the town’s monument following a £280,000 refurbishment of the area.

Judith Haycock, Cornwall councillor for the Helston North division, said that on one morning last week no less than four taxis were parked in front of the Grylls Monument at the bottom of Coinagehall Street, despite it only being 10am.

She said: “After all that money that has been spent on making that attractive. If they’re parking in front of the monument, what a shame.”

She added there were several coach parties of visitors in the town centre that morning.

Mrs Haycock was speaking at the last meeting of the town council, where member John Boase said that double yellow lines for that area was one of the points being requested in a new traffic order for the town.

However, until that had gone through, Mr Boase questioned whether the single yellow line could be returned to that stretch of road as currently there were no road markings at all, following the public realm work.

“That’s already enforced, it just hasn’t been reinstated since they did the work,” he pointed out.

“If we had the single put back all we need to do is add one more line to it and it becomes a double.”
