The crew of a boat rescued by the the RNLI off the Lizard were so lost they thought they were near Land's End.

A crew from Falmouth coastguard visited Port Pendennis Marina on Saturday to view the vessel, which had been brought in by the Lizard lifeboat after the crew dialled 999 when the steering failed.

A coastguard spokesperson said: "It's believed that the vessel had been stood for some time before the passage and the crew had very little experience for the journey ahead. They had initially thought they were off Land's End, when in fact they were to the south of The Lizard when the lifeboat reached them."

Team members collected the details of the vessel and two crew members, checked over the safety equipment on board, and took an overview of the general condition of the vessel.

The spokesperson added: "If you're going to sea, it's vital to carry the correct safety equipment and that your vessel is fitted with a minimum of a VHF radio, ideally one that is DSC (Digital Selective Calling) capable. Again, the crew were not aware on how to use this."
