Three Helston Football Club members were the first help on scene following a crash near the club's Kellaway Park home yesterday evening (11/4).

Bob Middleton, Shaun Parker and Peter Wake, who are all involved with the youth teams' management and training, were just leaving the ground when two vehicles collided at the junction of Clodgey Lane and Trengrouse Way, at around 9.30pm.

Mr Middleton, the club's youth chairman, said: "We had a meeting at the club to do with youth football, and there was a game on, and we were coming out of the club.

"We heard a sort of bang and there was an accident down the road. We rushed down there to help out.

"One of the guys, Shaun Parker, went and talked to the injured - I don't think anybody was seriously injured - and myself and Pete Wake did traffic."

Mr Middleton said the three men, who all serve or have served in the navy, "took charge of the situation until the emergency services arrived."

Aside from making sure the cars' occupants were safe, they spent the time slowing down traffic and redirecting it, making sure vehicles could still pass, until first responders arrived to take over.

Mr Middleton added: "We were just happy to help. Things like that can get a lot worse.

"We went and assessed the situation and did what we could."

Mr Middleton also said he "did not want to make a big deal of it, but the men's efforts drew congratulations from other club members and supporters.

Sandra Bell, who saw the men helping out at the scene, wrote on the club's Facebook page: "Respect to Bob Middleton Shaun Parker and Pete Wake for helping out at an accident at the traffic lights on Clodgey Lane. They directed traffic and kept the junction safe until the emergency services arrived. Well done guys."

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that nine firefighters from Helston and Mullion had helped at the scene of the crash, making the vehicles safe and treating casualties.
