It's decision time in the Helston and Lizard area as Cornwall prepares to go to the polls this Thursday to select who should be in charge of running the county over the next four years.

Campaigning time is over for the candidates vying to be the next Cornwall councillors, with polling stations opening at 7am tomorrow and remaining open until 10pm.

There are some long-standing faces missing, not least Judith Haycock, who is not standing for Helston South division after serving at county level since 2009 and as a Kerrier district councillor before that. Instead five new names have put themselves forward and the division will be represented by either David Adams, James Buchanan, Thomas Maher, John Martin or Alice Waddoups.

In the town’s other two divisions – Helston North and Porthleven and Helston West – both existing councillors, Phil Martin and Andrew Wallis, have put themselves forward once again, but each face competition from three other candidates: Yvonne Bates, Andrew Lewis and Mike Thomas for Helston North and Neil Clark, Jenny Dearlove and Danny Williams for Porthleven and Helston West.

St Keverne and Meneage is also certain to have a new face representing it, after Walter Sanger decided to stand down after five years in the role, having been elected in a by-election in 2012 following the death of Pam Lyne and subsequently re-elected the following year. He will be replaced by either Wendy Gauntlett, Paul Parfitt or Julian Rand.

Existing Mullion and Grade-Ruan postholder Carolyn Rule will be fighting to keep her seat against competition from Helen Angel, Marianna Baxter and Alfred Mesropians.
