His family has been associated with organising Flora Day for well over half a century and if there is anything the Olivers don't know about the big event then it's almost certainly not worth knowing.

This year, however, marked the first Flora Day since Chris Oliver stepped down as secretary of the Flora Day Association.

He officially handed over the role, which was held by his father Len Oliver before him, in January to Nick Wills, but will continue to be a steward of the dances.

A special presentation was held ahead of the Midday Dance rehearsal on the eve of Flora Day, to honour Chris and present him with a tree for his garden, as a token of the association's gratitude for his decades of work, while his wife Sheila was given a bouquet.

John Eddy, chairman of the Flora Day stewards, said: "Chris has dedicated a magnificent service to Flora Day as secretary of the association over 30 years and deserves all our thanks.

"We are delighted to say all that experience will not be wasted as Chris is continuing to be a steward, much to our relief."

Chris first joined the team of stewards 37 years ago, in 1980, and six years later became joint secretary of the association with his father. He then became sole secretary from 2001.
