The heat has really been on Helston’s sixth form students in recent months as they worked to get those all-important A-level grades, but even they didn’t expect to see firefighters called to their leavers’ prom last night.

A small fire inside one of the buildings at Helston Community College resulted in a dramatic start to the year 13 prom as students gathered in the North Site car park.

It is understood from witnesses at the scene that one of the college’s laser printers caught alight and set off a smoke alarm.

No one was hurt, but the building was evacuated as a precaution and two crews scrambled from Helston Fire Station.

The firefighters didn’t have far to come, with the station based just over the road from the college, And while a fire engine has been the quirky vehicle of choice to arrive in at proms for a number of years now, not many students can boast of having their photo taken with actual on-duty fire crews.

After quickly dealing with the culprit printer and making sure everything was safe and cleared of smoke, the firefighters were only too happy to pose for pictures with the delighted teenagers before they headed back to station and the students continued on to their evening celebration.

This involved an evening of food and dancing at the Falmouth Hotel, giving the students a chance to relax after the stressful exam season and say their farewells before going their separate ways to university or work.
