The rain stayed away from the 72nd Trewennack Horticultural Show on Saturday, which proved a great success and was well supported by both exhibitors and the public.

The show was opened by Rebecca Wills of BBC Radio Cornwall and the prizes and cups were presented by Margaret Williams. Breage Band played during the afternoon.

There were almost 1,000 entries from both adults and children, and for the third year the show included an Inter-Schools Challenge that was won by Halwin School.

Trophies for most points in the show were won by S Sharrington (ladies), Clarence Thomas (gentlemen), Isolde Trevorrow (girls) and Thomas Curnow (boys).

Visitors were able to survey a vast array of entries in the marquee, set up in the grounds of Trewennack Chapel.

These included cookery described to be of "a very high standard," including in the preserve section, while flowers provided both colour and perfume.

For a variety of reasons the number of entries in the fruit and vegetable sections were lower than usual, but there continued to be a high standard of entry with much friendly rivalry among the growers.

The children’s entries showed creativity in variety of skills, including cookery and floral art.

The egg section proved to be as popular as ever, with a large number of entries, with floral art also attracting an increase in numbers.

Another area that was commented on by visitors and judges was the handicraft section, which enjoyed an increased number of pictures.

Refreshments were served in the chapel hall by a team of helpers led by Maureen Haywood.

Show chairman John Strike thanked committee members for the work they had put into making this year another successful show, as well as the judges for giving their time to support the event.
