Helston Town Band are officially amongst the best in the south west after coming first in their section at today’s West of England Regional Championships.

The town already had no doubt in the quality of its band, which is renowned for its rendition of the Floral Dance every May 8, but now that has been given official confirmation.

Members were named champions of the second section at the West of England Brass Band Associations regional finals in Torquay.

They will now move on to the next stage of the championships, to take place in Cheltenham.

The band has given “massive thanks” to professional conductor John Berryman, who has been rehearsing with members in the run up to the competition.

In the third section of the competition, Porthleven Town Band was awarded sixth place out of 18 competing bands - making them second in the section overall.

A spokesperson said: “Porthleven be proud of your band - a stunning result for Porthleven Town Band. We are all so pleased and proud.”

They went on to praise the work of the players and musical director Tom Bassett.
